3 Types of Tomato-Based Pasta Sauces

We love making Italian food and inspiring people to cook their own. This is why we offer Mickey’s Famous Pasta Sauce. Most of the mentioned sauces can be made by using Mickey’s sauce or another favorite tomato based sauce. You could even make your own sauce from scratch.

Marinara Sauce

If you would prefer to make your own sauce from scratch, marinara sauce is not that difficult. While we cannot give away the secret of Mickey’s Famous Pasta Sauce, we can give you a simple recipe you can do on your own.


1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 medium-sized yellow onion chopped fine
1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
1/2 cup red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt


Begin in a large (12-inch) skillet. Heat the olive oil, and then pour in the onion. Lightly stir the onion around so that all of the pieces are heated evenly. When the onion begins to become translucent (this should take 5-10 minutes), add the garlic. Cook the onion and garlic for about another minute and then add the wine. The wine should boil instantaneously, keep lightly stirring the mixture until most of the liquid has evaporated. Then add the tomatoes, parsley, salt, and pepper. If you would like, you could add a little extra flavor with some sweet basil and oregano. Bring the temperature down to the lowest setting, cover, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes.

Marinara is a sauce that is versatile. It can be used on any type of pasta. It can be eaten with Italian sausage, meatballs, or chicken parmesan. It can also be used as a pizza sauce. Because it is so versatile, it is often used as the base for many other kinds of sauces.

Diavolo Sauce

In order to make an easy Diavolo sauce, take your favorite tomato-based marinara sauce and add some crushed red pepper. You can make it as spicy you want. This is an excellent pasta sauce to eat with seafood such as shrimp or scallops. It is usually eaten with flatter pastas such as fettuccine.

Vodka Sauce

A Vodka Sauce is known for its “pink” color. It is a combination of a tomato-based sauce and a cream sauce. It is very easy.


1 tablespoon of olive oil
1/2 of a yellow onion, chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons of garlic
3/4 cup of vodka
2 cups of your favorite marinara sauce
3/4 cup of cream


Heat olive oil in a large (12-inch skillet), stir in yellow onion. When the onion becomes translucent (this takes about 5-10 minutes), add in the a garlic and cook for another minute. Then, add the vodka. Stir lightly while the vodka boils down and most of the liquid is evaporated (this takes about 3 minutes). Pour in the marinara sauce and the cream. Turn down the temperature and let simmer for 15 minutes.

Since this is a “pink” pasta sauce, it can be eaten with different meats such as chicken, sausage, or meatballs. It also pairs well with either white or red wine. It is usually eaten with penne pasta.

Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with these recipes. If you want it to be a little bit more garlicky, add more garlic. If you want your vodka sauce to be a little creamier, add more cream. Cooking Italian food is not about a recipe. It’s about experimentation and creating amazing flavors.
